Drug-Free Safety Training Programs

Drug Use in the Workforce - According to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, of the 11.4 million illicit drug users age 18 or older, 74.8 percent are employed either full-or part-time. The industries with the highest rates of reported drug use are the same as those at high risk for injuries, such as construction, mining, manufacturing and wholesale. Seventy-one percent of the workforce admitted to drinking alcohol during the workday, most often at lunchtime. Ninety-two percent of the workforce has gone into work with hangover. More than 60 percent of adults know someone who has reported for work under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. And one in five workers report that they've had to work harder, redo work or cover for a co-worker as a result of a fellow employee's drinking.

Central to drug prevention in the workplace is the development and implementation of a drug-free safety program. The following are the key components.
