Residents are excused from all other clinical duties every Tuesday afternoon for four hours of didactics. Our lecture schedule is designed to cover all core competencies in the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonology, gastrointestinal, nephrology, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, psychiatry, infectious disease, musculoskeletal, pediatrics, and preventative medicine.

Interns receive extensive observation and education in the simulation center at Bethesda North, both in medical and procedural competencies. During inpatient medicine rotations, the team will also run an additional simulation per month. The simulation center receives excellent support and is well staffed with a number of different medical professionals. Time spent there is consistently well reviewed and continually improved upon.

Lectures are based on up-to-date, evidence-based medicine, and include standard PowerPoint lecture formats, interactive group sessions, and hands-on procedural lectures. This is accomplished both by core faculty attendings, residents, and some of our area’s best specialists. At least one lecture hour a month is reserved for board review, which may be one reason our residents consistently score above the national average on our annual American Board of Family Medicine in-training exam. There are also lectures dedicated to Practice Management, including lectures for third year residents, such as contract negotiation and choosing a practice.

The goal of Bethesda's extensive educational lecture series is to cover the majority of important medical topics that supplement each resident’s clinical experience. Every lecture given is evaluated by both faculty and resident physicians in order to continuously improve our didactic sessions.
