The family medicine clerkship is intended to enable third and fourth year medical students to experience family medicine in the outpatient setting. Clerkships are usually one month long, and students spend each day at the Family Medicine Center. The usual hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The student evaluates the patient by himself or herself, completes an assessment and presents the patient to the attending physician. Students may also assist on procedures such as pap smears, laceration repair, minor office surgery, and cryotherapy. Didactic teaching takes place every Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes topics on all aspects of family medicine. Lecturers include faculty, residents, experts from the medical staff and outside speakers.
University of Cincinnati medical students interested in a clerkship at Bethesda should contact the UC Family Medicine Department at (513) 558-1435. Students from other medical schools should contact Scott Woods MD at (513) 977-6758.
