Pregnancy Activity Levels

Because you have a high-risk pregnancy, your doctor has prescribed more rest until your baby is born. The following information describes different kinds of rest and activity to help you and your family understand the instructions. If there is an activity that you would like to do that is not listed, please ask your doctor or nurse. Sexual activity will be discussed with you on an individual basis.

Level I

  • Get eight hours of sleep at night.
  • Rest one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. Lie on either side while you rest. This may be in bed, on the couch or in a reclining chair.
  • Do light household chores only. Get help for heavy cleaning like vacuuming, scrubbing floors.
  • Do not do exercises and strenuous physical sports.
  • Take short walks (2-3 blocks) if desired.
  • You can go on short shopping trips, to a movie or out to dinner once in a while.
  • If you work outside the home, you may need to decrease your hours or work part time.
  • Other requirements may be recommended by your doctor

Level II

  • Get eight hours of sleep at night.
  • Rest at least 8 to 10 hours each day. Lie on either side while you rest. This may be in bed, on the couch or in a reclining chair.
  • You may get up to go to the bathroom and take a shower.
  • Make simple meals for you and your family.
  • You will need help with housekeeping, laundry and grocery shopping.
  • Do not walk, exercise or do physical sports.
  • If you work outside the home, you must stop work and be on sick leave.
  • Other requirements may be recommended by your doctor
