Ian Rice M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy, treating athletes and active individuals of all ages.  Dr. Rice performs advanced arthroscopic procedures for sports-related injuries of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow.

Dr. Rice was born and raised in Cincinnati and attended St. Xavier High School, Miami University and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He was chief orthopedic surgery resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot Hospital, and completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Beacon Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

Beyond his educational background, Dr. Rice is a published researcher and active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS), and the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) among others.  He serves as faculty member for the Beacon Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Rice has extensive team physician experience, having served as an assistant team orthopedic surgeon for professional, college and high school teams (including the Cincinnati Reds, Wilmington College and Archbishop Moeller High School during his time with Beacon). He is currently the medical director and team physician for Roger Bacon High School and Walnut Hills High School.

Dr. Rice’s sports medicine philosophy means he is committed to getting athletes healthy so they can return to the field or court as soon as possible.  He believes exercise is medicine, and healthy joints are the foundation for achieving peak fitness potential.  His patients rely on him to help them preserve and restore the joints they were born with rather than replace them, and utilize all the tools that modern medicine and technology can offer to accomplish that goal.
