How a Routine Mammogram Helped Susan Catch Breast Cancer Quickly

When Susan went in for her annual routine mammogram, she thought it would be like any other year.

This time, however, she was called back in for a secondary 3D mammogram for further testing – something she was not used to.

“I found out I had a cancerous tumor in my left breast,” Susan remembered of the 3D mammogram.

Upon hearing that the tumor was very small and that it had been caught quickly, Susan only had one question at first:

“Are you sure?” she asked her oncologist, Dr. Kathleen Raque.

After coming to terms with her diagnosis, Susan prepared herself.

“I had Dr. Raque, and she told me I was going to have surgery, she would remove it and then I would go through radiation,” Susan said about her treatment plan. “And step-by-step what she had told me is what I went through – so I was well-prepared.”

She felt especially comforted by Dr. Raque, who Susan said was confident that her case was treatable and really went above and beyond.

“Dr. Raque and her assistant Meredith were the ones that were there for me from the start to the end,” Susan said.

“They calmed me... they made me feel like I had nothing to worry about, and that’s the part I’ll never forget.”
