Interested in science as a child, Dr. Heil’s volunteer experiences at a hospital and a summer camp for children with illnesses inspired him to pursue a medical career. Seeing the valued relationships his grandfather built as a community physician influenced his decision as well. With the guidance of mentors, he chose to specialize in neurology, a field where he believes there is still much to be discovered.
Dr. Heil treats disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. In his role as the Inpatient Director of Neurology at Good Sam, he primarily focuses on hospitalized patients while sustaining some outpatient availability for referrals. For eight years prior to joining TriHealth, Dr. Heil served as an associate professor, where he saw patients with neuromuscular diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis and muscular dystrophy. He also established the region’s only autonomic testing lab.
With an emphasis on listening, Dr. Heil encourages his patients to tell their stories in their own words. He strives to answer all questions and put his patients at ease. And he believes that optimizing overall health includes both physical and mental health care. Dr. Heil is excited about the many developments on the horizon for brain disease, showing great promise for treating disorders that may have once been considered untreatable.
