Did you know? According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than one out of ten Americans have diabetes and about a third of adult Americans are prediabetic. Diabetes can have a negative affect on numerous systems within the body, including an increase risk of heart disease, so it’s important to diagnose diabetes and assess additional risks to your health.
In this segment of TriHealth’s Medical Minute, Cardiologist Kamal Shemisa, MD, with the TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute, explains the risks of diabetes toward your cardiovascular health and why you should discuss the risks with your doctor if you are diabetic. Dr. Shemisa has developed a program at TriHealth for patients with diabetes for the treatment and prevention of heart disease. He talks about the program and about treatments for diabetes that can also lower the risk of heart disease and the importance of a team-based approach to caring for your health involving your primary care physician, your cardiologist and you. Dr. Shemisa also reminds listeners of the importance of seeking care for heart disease and other medical emergencies in spite of anxiety over COVID-19.
