The most common measurement for obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI does not actually measure body fat. Rather, it provides general parameters of degrees of obesity. Therefore, it should not be used alone for diagnosis.
The World Health Organization has defined several weight categories based on BMI:
BMI Range |
Weight Category |
| 20 to 24.9 |
Ideal weight |
| 25 to 29.9 |
Overweight |
| 30 to 34.9 |
Moderate obesity |
| 35 to 39.9 |
Severe obesity |
| 40+ |
Morbid obesity |

Note: The BMI calculation does not distinguish between body fat and muscle, which may provide a false reading for persons with a high percentage of muscle.
